General Info
The first 16-page issue of the Inter-County Leader rolled off the presses in the early morning hours of Nov. 2, 1933. Many Farmers Union members were involved in both the Farm Holiday movement and the development of the Leader. The impetus for beginning a new newspaper came from the feeling many had that existing newspapers did not understand the problems of the farm community. It appeared that they were not willing to promote the organizational efforts of farm groups and others seeking government action to relieve the economic situation in America's farmland. The name Inter-County Leader was chosen in order to go along with the desire for inclusion by members in neighboring counties. The circulation of the Leader soon grew to almost 3,000 copies per week within its first three years. The Inter-County Leader is headquartered in Frederic, Wis.
