        Come See For Yourself!In January 1961, shortly after the Amon Carter Museum opened to the public for the first time, Newsweek magazine reported that "this week the blend of old and new will be clearly visible when [Fort Worth] opens its new Amon Carter Museum. The occasion is not only important in itself, but is another sign of the growing interest in art throughout Texas."Now, over forty years later, that interest-especially in North Texas-has never been stronger. On October 21, 2001, the Amon Carter Museum again opened to the public. This time, though, it did so after a two-year, $39 million expansion that tripled the gallery space to nearly 30,000 square feet; overall, the museum increased tin size from 65,000 to 109,000 square feet.This grand, new building, designed by the museum's original architect, Philip Johnson, also establishes the museum as a major conservation center of photography and works on paper, as well as a graduate-level research facility both for scholars of American art and the general public. Beyond this, there are expanded public spaces for education and outreach activities, places where teachers and their students can experience the museum's splendid collections firsthand.The main gallery and its satellite galleries, just inside the 1961 entrance, have been beautifully refurbished. From these areas, and from the new entrance on Lancaster Avenue, visitors can proceed into the new building by way of the grand atrium, a wonderful space topped by a low, softly-lit done. A monumental stairway of granite and bronze rises along the shellstone-clad walls to reach the spacious new galleries on the upper floor. Here, visitors can truly appreciate for the first time the awe-inspiring breadth of the museum's permanent collections.
