General Info
Ingrid and David Broderick and their 9 year old daughter, Emily, run Emily'Sugar Rush, located at the cross roads of Austin Street and 72nd Avenue in Forest Hills, New York a mere 4 stops on the E or F train from Midtown Manhattan or just 8 miles by car. Emily'Sugar Rush is an old fashion Country Chic candy store located in the middle of urban Forest Hills. When you walk into Emily's not only will you feel like you have been transported back in time but out of the City to a country getaway such as New Hope, PA, Rock Port, MA or Mystic, CT. Ingrid and her staff will warmly greet you with the long forgotten word of "Welcome." Ingrid prides herself with customer service. If she does not carry the candy you wish, she will seek it out. Ingrid has made many wonderful discoveries for their customers who have learned from Ingrid that their old time favorite candy still exists but may have merely changed name, ie. "Marathon Bar" became the "Curly Wurly" and the "Delfa Roll" is now the "Broadway Roll". One will find licorice creams, honey-filled queen bees, gummi bears, jawbreakers, salt water taffy, orange slices, cherry bites, spearmint leaves, horehound drops, old time chewing gum, and licorice twists among the array of Old Fashioned candy. It's a treasure trove of products for those filling Easter baskets or shopping for Valentine, Halloween, or Christmas. However, for those who want more and are daring there are "Ant Candies," "Scorpion Suckers," "Chocolate Covered Ants" and a lot more. Ingrid told me while interviewing her to build this website "We knew nothing about Candy when we opened this store in May (2011). We are enjoying the process of learning about Candy and it has become both a passion and adventure. My husband loves speaking to people in England, France and Italy about confections. And, we are constantly seeking to bring more candies made from real sugar and NOT high fructose corn syrup." Ingrid further told me that she was surprised to learn that many of her customers are "Vegan" and a large group of others desire "gluten free" candies. As a result Emily's is constantly updating their selection provide a more extensive selection of these types of Candies and have asked that this website be built to create those categories of candies. Emily's Truffles are to die for and their cake is out of this world. You have to be lucky to get their cake. Their baker, "Big Mo," brings only so many slices of cake daily. Once those cakes are sold, that is it for the day. They are out. And, the cakes sell out fast. I asked Ingrid, "Why don't you carry more slices of cake?" Ingrid answered, "Because, we want our cake to always be fresh. If you have 100 pieces of Red Velvet Cake and only 50 sell, then you have 50 pieces of day old cake. Who wants that? If that's what the customer wants, they can get that anywhere."
