Matthew McCarthy, MD is a member of Summit Health's Pediatric Neurology team. He is board-certified in pediatric neurology and has additional fellowship training in sports neurology and concussion.Dr. McCarthy has expertise in managing acute concussion, post-concussion syndrome, and other neurological conditions in athletes of all ages and levels of competition. He specializes in using an active and individualized approach to symptomatic treatment and rehabilitation after concussion to ensure a safe and efficient return to sports and other activities. As a sports neurologist, he is focused on long term athlete brain health and promoting safe and lifelong sports participation. Ive been an athlete my entire life, and my choice to ultimately become a sports neurologist was driven by my continued passion for sports and physical activity, says Dr. McCarthy.Dr. McCarthy believes in a comprehensive and individualized approach to patient care that values involving the patient in decision making every step of the way. In addition to acute and ongoing treatment, he emphasizes prevention and establishing healthy lifestyle habits. He is passionate about the importance of physical activity and sports participation for children as a staple of a healthy lifestyle. Im an advocate for long-term athlete brain health and working to promote safe and lifelong sports participation. In treating sport-related neurological injuries, its critical to consider the benefits and significance sports can play in a persons life in addition to the risks, says Dr. McCarthy. In addition to his role at Summit Health, Dr. McCarthy serves as a neurological consultant to several local high school, college, club, and professional sports teams.When he is not seeing patients, Dr. McCarthy enjoys playing hockey, basketball, and tennis, snowboarding, golfing, running, reading, baking, and hiking with his dog Nino.
