After 4 years of college and another 12 years of medical education, I decided to open my own plastic surgery practice. I started out by telling other surgeons I would be happy to help. One day another plastic surgeon called me that they needed assistance with a patient, whom had a devastating scalping injury. We spent over 8 hours in the operating room. We didn’t leave the operating room till we gave the patient the best result we could. This was one of my first cases I did in private practice, and probably my longest emergent case. That’s how I started my practice: by offering to help people. No problem was too big or small. Since those early days I have helped people after accidents and those interested in aesthetic surgery. There have been many memorable moments: • the otoplasty (ear pinning) patient who got emotional when they saw their new ears for the first time • the rhinoplasty (nose job) patient who’s personality became more outgoing after surgery • the tummy tuck patient who was amazed by how flat their belly looked. I continued to be surprised that aesthetic surgery can do so much. Aesthetic surgery truly is psycho-surgery: the results sometimes are most evident in the way a patient sees themselves. Many people today look forward to be alive at ninety and beyond. But what if we could live long and look great? That is the potential of plastic surgery!
