Dr. Wengerter has practiced in the field of vascular surgery for over 20 years in both academic and private practice settings. He is a former Chief of Vascular Surgery at Albert Einstein College Hospital in NYC, and has served as Vascular Lab Director in three academic institutions. He trained and worked with Dr. Frank Veith, the renowned vascular surgeon at Montefiore Hospital in NYC where he served as an Associate Professor. He is an author on nearly 50 research papers and 25 textbook chapters and has presented over 30 invited lectures at local, national and international meetings. In 2013, he served as President of the Vascular Society of New Jersey and has actively participated in training over 20 Fellows in Vascular Surgery. He served as a volunteer Vascular Surgeon in 2011 at the Landstuhl US Army Hospital in Germany. Since completing his training, Dr. Wengerter has performed over 1000 reconstructive bypass and endovascular procedures to save circulation-compromised limbs. Much of his career has been devoted to this area of practice. Dr. Wengerter has led the advanced use of newer endovascular techniques of atherectomy and stent placement at Englewood to reduce the need for open surgery to save limbs. Dr. Wengerter has also been involved in the advancement of catheter-based endovascular techniques for aortic aneurysm repair and participated in the initial application of these procedures both at Montefiore and Englewood. He also performed the first purely percutaneous (through a skin puncture) repair of an aortic aneurysm at Englewood, avoiding skin incisions completely. Over the past 15 years Dr. Wengerter has worked closely with the renal service at Englewood Hospital to apply endovascular and surgical techniques to the care of vascular access for dialysis patients.
