J. Smith Lanier & Co. is an employee-owned company that was established in 1868 and has become one of the largest privately owned insurance brokers in the United States. Since 1868, the company has grown from a three-employee local agency to a major regional firm employing more than 425 employees in nearly 10 divisions and more than 15 branch offices. The firm investigates areas of potential loss with the client and offers suggestions on how to handle such exposures. In every case, its philosophy is to eliminate, reduce or transfer the cost of risk. If this is not possible, it will recommend that insurance be purchased or the risk self-insured. J.
