Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, spiritually-based organization that coordinates human service programs and opportunities for community involvement. The organization serves more than 2 million people each year. It initiates outreach programs that deal with pressing social needs. Volunteers of America assists at-risk youths, elderly citizens, abused and neglected children, disabled individuals and homeless people. The organization designs, builds and manages affordable housing for the underprivileged. It offers shelter, job training and transitional housing to homeless individuals and families. Volunteers of America also promotes residential and outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addictions. The organization has programs for clinical services, health education, screenings and assisted living. It helps to rehabilitate offenders through halfway houses, work release, dispute resolution and mediation. Volunteers of America was established in 1896 and operates throughout the nation.
