Preschool Prep Company, for example, offers a series of DVDs designed to help kids learn the basics in a fun and entertaining way. Kids are introduced to early learning concepts in, and Meet the Shapes. The animated shows use characters and repetition to help kids learn and recognize letters, numbers and shapes. The company also recently released a new series for beginning readers called Meet the Sight Words. The DVDs are very learning intensive, but the characters and animation make learning the basics a bit more entertaining for young kids. When I first saw the Preschool Prep DVDs, I was afraid all of the repetition would be too boring for kids, but my children and the kids in my test groups seem to love them. When my kids were learning their ABC's, I let them watch Meet the Letters as their TV time program a couple of times a week, and the program was very effective. The explanation at the beginning of the DVD encourages parents to let kids watch in segments, but many kids are fine watching the whole thing at once.
