Dr. Skandan Shanmugan is a board-certified UCI Health colorectal surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical approaches to treating diseases of the colon and rectum. His clinical interests include advanced colorectal cancer, complex inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). He earned his medical degree at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., where he completed at residency in general surgery. He received fellowship training in colorectal surgery at Case-Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Before joining UCI Health and the UCI School of Medicine, he served as chief of colon and rectal surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he received multiple surgical and teaching awards. Shanmugan's research interests include the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of recurrent or advanced colon and rectal cancer, complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease, evaluating quality metrics and preventing complications in colorectal surgery, and outcomes research. He is the author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an active member of multiple surgical societies, including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
