Head for sparkling Lake Blackshear, an 8,700-acre boating, fishing and waterskiing haven. Hop on the SAM Shortline train to visit President Jimmy Carter's former campaign headquarters in Plains and his boyhood home in Archery. You'll pass fanciful Victorian architecture at Americus, once a bustling cotton exchange. The Andersonville National Historic Site, the location of the Confederate prison camp, lies 40 miles west. Visit the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village, just 30 miles south. Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course is 10 miles west. In season, visit a local strawberry farm.
