General Info

LION and FOX Recording, Inc., officially established in 1979 has been around! Hal Lion and Jim Fox have been working together since 1973. Hal, a pioneer sound man, began in the business 20 years before that. We have been in the DC Metro area since 1967. With an electronics and radio engineering background, Hal Lion's audio roots as a film crew sound man began with Hearst Metrotone News covering the White House and providing most of ABC's prime time news features in the early 60's. In the mid 60's, as the broadcast video age began, the networks began forming their own crews using the new medium called video. So in keeping with film, Hal and some of Washington's film industry people formed Associated Producers consisting of the best film producer, writer, cameraman, electrician, and of course sound man. They moved into 1905 Fairview Ave NE that had been the home of Capitol Film Labs for the prior 20 years. Soon after, Hal and Sally Lion formed Lion Recording Services, Inc. Lion Recording Services became a full service industrial recording studio in 1967. Continuing in the tradition of film-crew audio, Hal, thriving on an unbeatable reputation, continued to provide services for location recording for synchronous film and radio, and began 16mm mag film services for sync transfers and 16mm mag film Mixing. 16mm film was still the medium of choice for training films and commercial spots. With the advent of the Phillips compact audio cassette a new format took hold for industrial training films, the Audio Visual Slide Show, which consisted of 35mm slide/film and compact audio cassette. The popularity of the cassette fostered location conference recording for distribution on cassette. 1/4" Reel to Reel, was also in demand for radio programming, spots, and PSA's. In 1973 Jim Fox, who had been paying his way through electronics school as a musician, came on board as chief engineer in charge of production and maintenance while Hal concentrated on expanding cassette duplication. Fox managed all production of Audio Visual Slide Shows, Voice-over Spots, Location Radio and Film, Location Conference Recordings, 16mm mag Transfers and Mixing, and now Cassette Mastering. As Lion Recording Services continued to expand, Fox put his music skills to work and began expanding the studio to accommodate live musicians. Hal decided cassette duplication would become his main goal. In 1979 Hal and Sally Lion and Jim Fox formed LION and FOX Recording, Inc. ( L&F ) to handle all production work and to expand into Multitrack Music Recording and Video Sweetening, since video was becoming the medium of choice for industrial training. Lion Recording Services, ( LRS ) would continue to grow into one of the largest cassette and 1/4 duplication manufactures with graphics and fulfillment services. L&F was then fortunate to find Rob Buhrman for its chief engineer to build up the 4 studio complex. And as both L&F and LRS grew, LRS had to move it's entire duplication operation, in 1987, to a much larger building located at 7532 Fullerton Court, VA Springfield, while L&F took over the entire space at 1905 Fairview NE, Washington, DC. Today LRS' s continued growth, which now includes Richard Lion, has turned it into a major CD manufacturing and graphics facility. LRS continues to dominate in cassette duplication. In August, 1997 L&F moved to its new custom built, 4 studio facility in a 9000 square foot space at 6100 Lincolnia Road, Alexandria, Virginia. In September, 2005 L&F moved again to 9517 Baltimore Avenue, MD 20740 College Park This move greatly enhanced L&F's ability to serve its customers while maintaining the convenience to downtown Washington and the Metro area.
