Probate Administration - Losing a loved one is traumatic. Trying to take care of the legal matters that arise while you are grieving is confusing and stressful, especially if you have never done it before. Every situation is unique and requires personal attention. Having an experienced guide through this process helps relieve stress and avoid mistakes. It is the lawyer's job to do this competently and efficiently. During the first consultation I will explain the process, how long it may take, how much it may cost, and address the particular questions and issues involved. Wills, etc. - It is far better, and much less expensive, to have appropriate documents already in place when death or disability strikes. There are four documents that are especially valuable at those times. Everyone, particularly people who are married and/or have children, should have these tailored to their specific situation. As life goes on they should be reviewed and updated as may be necessary. The basic documents are not very expensive. Trusts cost more but are well worth the expense as an extremely effective way to address certain issues when necessary. Real Estate - Anyone who has bought or sold a house knows this is a very complex area of the law. Whether selling, buying, leasing or otherwise dealing with real estate, it is wise to seek counsel before signing anything. TOD stands for Transfer On Death. It is an inexpensive way of arranging the transfer of ownership of real estate upon death without probate administration. Business - There are several types of business entities to choose from, and they have different characteristics with respect to liability and taxes. Obviously it is important to find out which one is best for your situation. It is also very important to keep the legal records updated on a current basis. Many businesses benefit from using a carefully crafted master contract that can be tailored to specific circumstances.
