- NephrologyThe Kidney and Hypertension Center (KHC) would like to thank our community for trusting us with their kidney care needs for nearly 50 years. Our founder, Lionel King, MD, introduced nephrology to the Tristate area in 1963. Under his care, Cincinnati saw the first patient initiated on dialysis and the first patient undergo a kidney transplant in 1964. In 1972, our group was established and began to expand as our founding members recognized the growing need for kidney care in our community. More recently, in 1997, under the leadership of Thomas “Mick†Shaughnessy, MD, our group formally became known as The Kidney and Hypertension Center and entered a period of rapid growth to continue to meet the expanding needs of the community we serve. As we approach our 50th anniversary, our group now includes 32 physicians and 10 nurse practitioners.
