The department operates a range of units, such as bicycle patrol, accident investigation, crime analysis, crime prevention, K-9, motorcycle and domestic abuse. It has a criminal investigations section that serves as the investigative body of the police department and specializes in investigating the crimes against persons and property. The special investigations section of the Chesapeake Police Department is responsible for drug and vice investigations within the city. Its traffic enforcement section handles funeral and oversized-vehicle escort requests, house-moving escorts, inspections of taxicabs and traffic-related citizen complaints.
