- Skin CancerSkin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Risk factors include excessive sun exposure, tanning, fair and freckly skin, history of sunburns, having numerous moles called dysplastic nevi, and family history. The two most common types of skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. The least common, but most serious, type of skin cancer is melanoma which can be deadly if not detected early. It is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue, and in some cases spread elsewhere in the body. The physicians at our practice offer full body skin exam and skin cancer screenings and, if necessary, perform biopsies and removal of suspicious moles right in the office under local anesthesia. To schedule an appointment for a skin cancer screening, please call (704) 341-0090.
- DermatologyMolluscum contagiosum, also known as “water warts”, are a common pediatric dermatology problem caused by a virus. They are very common in children, but can also be seen in adults.
- Acne TreatmentAcne is caused by the clogging of pores (whiteheads and blackheads) which can also cause red bumps, pimples and deeper lumps (nodules and cysts) to form. It is most frequently seen on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and even the upper arms. It usually affects teenagers due to increased hormones and overactive oil glands, but adults can also be affected. Adult acne is common in middle-aged women. Acne can be disfiguring and have a profound emotional impact on patients. When severe acne forms, permanent scarring may occur. Early acne treatment to improve complexion and prevent acne scarring is vital! There are many effective treatments for acne. Mild to moderate cases can be treated with prescription or over-the-counter topical medications, oral medication, or a combination of both. More severe cases of acne may require a dermatologist to prescribe stronger medications such as hormone blockers or isotretinoin (accutane), an oral medication that reduces the size of the oil glands and prevents acne scarring and new acne from forming.
