General Info
Dr. John Cox is a clinical professor of pulmonary medicine, with a faculty appointment to the Department of Medicine and consulting privileges at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. Dr. Cox's main area of interest is in the care of patients with asthma, especially the most severe cases of persistent asthma. With his dual board certification in pulmonary medicine and allergy/immunology, he is able to offer a comprehensive range of testing and treatment options for patients. He is director of the comprehensive asthma clinic, within the division of pulmonary, critical care, allergy, and sleep medicine at MUSC. He also sees patients with general pulmonary problems and allergic complaints, such as allergic rhinitis.Dr. Cox was born and raised in Pennsylvania and graduated from Bucknell University and George Washington University Medical School. There he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and completed a combined pulmonary and allergy/immunology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.He served four years in the Air Force, as chief of pulmonary medicine at Andrews AFB. Following completion of his military service, he returned to central Pennsylvania and engaged in private practice from 1993 until 2015, when he became a full-time faculty member of the MUSC pulmonary division.
