General Info
Dr. Heather Y. Hughes was appointed clinical assistant professor in the MUSC Infectious Diseases Division in July 2017. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and cellular biology from the University of Georgia, she then went on to obtain her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. She completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and served as chief resident for the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Health System. She completed her infectious diseases fellowship at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland. While at NIAID, she focused on the study of antimicrobial-resistance and the prevention of hospital-acquired infections. During her fellowship, she earned a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.Dr. Hughes is board-certified in infectious diseases and internal medicine. Her clinical interests include general infectious diseases, HIV and HCV care. She serves as the hospital epidemiologist for the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and is an active member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the American Medical Association. Her research interests include the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance.
