- ArthritisArthritis is a common, yet misunderstood condition. It is an inflammation of at least one joint – often multiple joints – that results in discomfort, pain, and stiffness in the affected joints and body. Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling, decreased range of motion, and stiffness. Arthritis isn’t a single disease. There are over 100 different kinds and severities of the disease making it a leading cause of disability in Americans. However, there are two main types of arthritis that can benefit from routine chiropractic treatments – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Fibromyalgia
- Plantar FasciitisChiropractic treatments are very effective for the condition and the pain caused by plantar fasciitis. A very precise technique is used to adjust the feet and ankles and spinal adjustments may also be used to aid healing of the condition.
- SinusitisAcute sinusitis typically lasts less than eight weeks and shouldn’t occur more than three times per year. A sinus headache should not last any longer than the sinusitis.
- Pediatric CareAt Charleston Neck & Back Center, Dr. Hishon and his trained staff provide help and education in so many areas of our patient’s lives. Our focus is family wellness care but other treatments we focus on are spine correction, recovery and stabilization; sports, work or auto injuries; pediatric care; prenatal care for expecting moms; and full phase massage therapy.
- Ear InfectionsInfant ear infections are a common condition that can occur when fluid becomes trapped behind the eardrum and becomes infected. This can cause pain, fever, and irritability in the baby. Infants are particularly prone to ear infections because their immune systems are still developing, and their eustachian tubes, which help to drain fluid from the ear, are shorter and more horizontal than those of older children and adults. Chiropractic care is a great natural treatment to minimize the use of antibiotics.
- Emergency CareIn some situations, numbness, tingling, or burning can indicate a serious medical condition or injury. Seek urgent care if you experience back, head, or neck injury; are unable to move or walk; lose consciousness, even if it’s only for a short time; become confused or have trouble thinking clearly, have severe pain or feelings of weakness, experience slurred speech or vision problems; or lose control of your bladder or bowels.
- Constipation
- Urinary IncontinenceSome of the benefits of chiropractic treatments during pregnancy include controlling nausea, controlling urinary incontinence, aligning the pelvis for an easier delivery, alleviating sciatic nerve pain, reducing labor and delivery time, and prevention of potential cesarean delivery.
- Diarrhea
- Pregnancy
- Labor and DeliverySI joint pain can occur when ligaments become too tight or too loose. This can occur due to work injury, falls, car accident, pregnancy or childbirth, or spine or hip surgery. Sacroiliac pain may also occur when movement in the pelvis isn’t equal on both sides. Uneven movement may occur when one leg is weaker or longer than the other or there is arthritis in the hip or knee. Autoimmune conditions such as axial spondylarthritis, or biomechanical conditions such as wearing a walking boot following surgery can lead to sacroiliac pain.
- Carpal Tunnel SyndromeCarpal tunnel syndrome results when pressure is put on the medial nerve in the wrist. The passageway of the nerve is surrounded by ligaments and bones, and when the nerve is compressed the arm and hand may become weak and have numbness and tingling.
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)Attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These symptoms can interfere with academic performance, social relationships, and overall quality of life.
- Stress ManagementYour ongoing treatment plan takes all parts of your lifestyle and health history into account, including recommendations regarding nutrition, stress management, posture, ergonomics, vitamins, specific exercises and relaxation techniques. It’s all customized to address your tension and pain; no two patients are exactly alike, and neither are your headaches. While the convenience of medications might be tempting, there’s no substitute for in-person, holistic chiropractic treatment to address the cause of your pain and remedy the problem.

- ThyroidIt isn’t known exactly what causes a shoulder to freeze in the first place, but there have been studies about who is most likely to be affected. It occurs most often in women ages 40 to 60. It is also more prevalent in people with diabetes, those with thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease, and Parkinson’s disease. People recovering from shoulder injuries are also at higher risk.
- UltrasoundThere are several treatment options a chiropractor can use to heal and prevent herniated discs. These include chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound therapy, spinal decompression, and more.
- MRIDiagnostic studies, such as digital x-rays, may also be helpful in identifying any structural abnormalities or pathologies to more accurately diagnose your condition. While an x-ray will help view the bones, it doesn’t help study soft tissues. If soft tissue damage is suspected, such as a torn muscle, nerve compression, or disc problem, it’s possible an MRI scan may be recommended.
- X-Rays
- Computed TomographyWhen you first experience pain, your doctor will complete a medical history and exam to understand your symptoms as well as any prior conditions or injuries. Imaging studies such as an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan may also be ordered.

- WhiplashWhiplash: in one jarring instant, everything changes. Neck pain. Loss of range of motion in your neck. Pounding headaches. Fatigue. Dizziness. If you’ve experienced the intense, sudden injury of whiplash, we already know that this resonates with you deeply. It can feel as if normal life has been turned upside Read More »
- Pinched NerveMassage works to ease pressure that a pinched nerve may be experiencing when the nerves are pinched due to tense or inflamed muscle tissue. Massage therapy will also help improve and regulate circulation in the body leaving you feeling relaxed. This can relieve muscle soreness, numbness, and tingling sensations.
- Hip ReplacementHip flexor syndrome can happen to anyone, although athletes seem to be at higher risk, particularly those that use their hips for running and jumping. Other causes may include osteoarthritis, injuries, overuse, and post hip replacement surgery.
- Sports MedicineMost acute back pain is a result of injuries during high-impact accidents such as car accidents and sports injuries. The joints may be dislodged or discs herniated resulting in pain and stiffness or pinches and sensitive nerve tissue.
- Physical TherapyMost cases of hip flexor syndrome can be managed with rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication. Sometimes physical therapy and steroid injections are used to relieve symptoms. Chiropractic treatments may also be beneficial to manipulate soft tissue, release myofascial tension and areas of tightness, and restore normal lumbopelvic joint mobility.
- Frozen ShoulderThe hallmark symptom of frozen shoulder is exactly what the name implies – frozen shoulder – or inability to move the shoulder. Symptoms often develop slowly over a several month period and pain increases, then decreases, as the condition progresses.
- Tennis ElbowPain associated with tennis elbow often radiates from the outside of the elbow into the forearm and wrist. Weakness in this area is often present as well. This makes it difficult to grip objects, shake hands, hold things, and turn door knobs.
- Slipped DiscYou may be familiar with the terms herniated and bulging discs, and while many people use them interchangeably, they are actually two separate conditions. A herniated disc results when a crack in the tough outer layer of the cartilage allows some of the soft inner cartilage to protrude out of the disc. This is also referred to as a ruptured disc or even a slipped disc–although actual disc slippage is rare. A herniated disc is more likely to cause pain and results from compression of the nerve or nerve root.

- Ankle SprainYou’ve probably likely heard the terms ankle strain and ankle sprain but may not know the difference. If that’s the case, you’re not alone. The two terms are often used interchangeably to describe a tearing or overstretching of soft tissues around and in the ankle joint. A joint sprain is when the ligaments, or bands of tissue that connect two bones together in a joint, are injured. A strain is the overstretching or tearing of muscles or tendons. Tendons connect bones to muscles.

- Manual TherapyChiropractic treatment for lower back pain usually involves some type of manual therapy. This may be spinal manipulation, known as a chiropractic adjustment, that applies gentle pressure to abnormal vertebrae to help reduce nerve irritability and restore range of motion in the lower back. Mobilization is another chiropractic treatment that refers to a lower-velocity manipulation that stretches the muscles and joints, increasing the range of motion.
- Orthotics and Prosthetic Therapy
- Achilles TendonitisAchilles tendonitis is typically caused by overuse, a change in running stride, exercising on a hill, tight calf muscles, unsupportive shoes, or weakness in the hips and core.

- Plantar FasciitisThe typical symptoms and signs of plantar fasciitis include pain at the bottom of the heel, which may be sharp, dull, or a burning ache. The pain may be toward the back or front of the heel. It usually builds up gradually over time, typically a few weeks. It is often worse when waking up in the morning.
