- Bed BugsThere are various species of bed bug; the common variety being Cimex lectularius. As their name suggests, bed bugs can be found in the seams of mattresses and bedding, and at night they come out and feed on sleeping hosts. - CockroachesThis is the month of the cockroach, with several different species of roaches common to our region. All have different needs for shelter and food.
- BeesBoth the hornet and the yellow jacket are protective over their nest and will sting repeatedly. To some individuals, bee stings can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction. If its nest is located near a building, home or walkway this can be a problem. Never attempt any control measure yourself if you have a known allergy to bees.

- CricketsSome spiders stray indoors during warm weather, although they can be found indoors any time of year. Their numbers may increase during late summer and fall when they search for winter hibernation sites. In homes, they feed on household flies and insects. Outdoors they are beneficial to the environment, feeding on insects such as flies, crickets, and mites.
- EarwigsBeautiful Putnam county is part of New York state and located between Connecticut and Hudson river. Most of Putnam county is occupied by water that makes this county a scenic region in New York. Despite the beauty and numerous water reservoirs of this county, Putnam is no stranger to various pests like rodents, bed bugs, termites, cockroaches, carpenter ants, bees, fleas, pigeons, earwigs, ticks, beetles.
- MosquitoesMosquitoes have four stages in their life cycle; egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female mosquito lays her eggs usually at night, sticking them together one at a time to form a raft from 200 to 300 eggs on the surface of water. A raft of eggs look similar to a speck of floating soot. Once they hatch, they are in their larval phase for 7-14 days. They feed on organic debris and microorganisms in the water while molting their exoskeleton several times until they become pupae. The mosquitoes will stay in this phase for about two days until they exit their pupal skin and fly off once their wings are dry to find their first meal. The average life span is two weeks.
- FliesThere are about 230 species of mosquitoes found in the United States, but the three most common species are Aedes albopicus, Culex pipens, and Anopheles quadrimaculatus. These flying and biting insects are in the order of Diptera (“two wings”), or flies.
- Millipedes
- Beetles
- ScorpionsSpiders are predatory insects that can spin silk. They form the largest portion of the Arachnid group, which they share with ticks and scorpions. Most spiders have the ability to inject venom into their prey in order to either paralyze or kill it. Currently, there are over 40,000 known spider species all over the world, and they are at least 318,000,000 years old. However, only a handful of these species will infest a home in the US.
- HornetsHornets and stinging insects are at their peak populations during this month. As the nights start to get longer and the days shorter, many pests will start to seek out the shelter they will need to survive the upcoming fall and winter months.
- Yellow JacketsThese social, stinging insects can be a problem inside homes and yards because of the abundance of food (unsealed garbage, open recycling bins, fallen fruit from trees, etc.). They prefer to nest in meadows, fields, trail and road edges, and under an overhang on a structure, such as a roof eave or gutter. They can also nest inside a structure’s wall by entering cracks and crevices near chimneys, windows, roofs, etc. Yellow Jackets can cause structural damage if a nest is built in a wall or attic by eating through wood and drywall to expand its nest.
- Stinging InsectsNever physically knock down, cut or burn large nests. This is a high risk for an attack from the colony. You can help manage stinging insects around your home by minimizing the number of wasps foraging for food.
- MitesBird mites will live on birds and in their nests until the host (food source) dies or abandons the nest. Up to thousands of mites will then migrate to find a new food source. A mite’s bite on a human can be painful, and cause itching and dermatitis. It is sometimes described as a sensation of “crawling” on the skin, or to some people there can be no skin irritation at all.
- Pill BugsThis time of year, the primary pests are what we call occasional invaders, such as pill bugs, millipedes and ants. Yellow jackets (sweat bees or ground hornets) are also becoming more of a problem this month.
- Palmetto BugsThe American cockroach is the largest cockroach that infests buildings in the United States. This insect may be recognized by a yellow “figure-8” pattern on the shield at the front of its body. In Florida, the American cockroach is called the “palmetto bug,” and it has the nickname “water bug” throughout the United States. See our cockroach section for more information.

Some carry diseases and parasites that can affect people such as Salmonella, Histoplasmisis and Meningitis.
- PigeonsPigeons have one mate at a time, and the male cares and guards the female and the nest. Eight to twelve days after mating, the female lays one or two eggs. The eggs hatch about eighteen day later. After, the young feed on a secreted substance called “pigeon milk”. The young birds then leave the nest when they are four to six years of age. The female will lay more eggs, typically in the spring and fall months. The average life of a wild pigeon is 15 years or longer.
