Founded in 1978, Tom W. Peters Elementary School offers learning opportunities to more than 600 students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. It provides instruction in reading, math and computer studies. The school offers various special programs that include classes for mentally challenged and visually impaired students. Tom W. Peters Elementary School also offers occupational, physical, and speech and language therapy services. The school provides extended-day care and gifted and talented programs. Tom W. Peters Elementary School conducts specialty classes in the areas of music, art and physical education. It offers a range of health care and counseling services. The school maintains a media center and provides an accelerated reader program. Tom W. Peters Elementary School operates a parent-teacher association and employs a staff of more than 35 people. It also operates student newspaper and chess clubs. The school also offers opportunities for students to participate in spelling bee competitions. Tom W. Peters Elementary School is governed by Union Public Schools, which operates various elementary, middle and high schools.
