American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, founded in 1969, is an organization of psychiatrists, promoting scientific and educational activities in the field of forensic psychiatry. The organization has more than 1,500 members in North America and throughout the world. It develops ethical guidelines for forensic psychiatry and provides information to the public through a speaker's bureau and printed collateral. The academy also develops guidelines for education and training in forensic psychiatry for both, general psychiatry residents and postresidency fellows. It also stimulates research in the field and provides a forum for the presentation of results of such research. AAPL sponsors continuing education programs for forensic and general psychiatrists, and other mental health and legal professionals. AAPL is located in Bloomfield, Conn.
