This "hydrostatic pressure" can exert tons of force causing your basement to leak and crack. Cracked and Buckled Walls Hydrostatic pressure can press against your foundation walls causing cracks or even buckling of the walls. Heavy, wet soil continually presses against your foundation walls. Saturated soil around your home in winter months can dramatically accelerate frost damage to your foundation. Basement Floor Cracks When water builds up in the soil around your home it creates pressure underneath your cellar floor. This pressure can exert enough force to cause your concrete floor to crack and leak. Other Reasons: Seepage from basement window wells. Poor grading around the foundation. High water table entering parging. Basement stairways, poor drainage. Cracks in masonry or masonry joints. Clogged or lack of footer drain fields. Horizontal cracks at or below grade. Clogged, broken downspouts/gutters. Downspouts pour water too close to walls. Non-visible undermining beneath slabs. Signs That You May Have a Water Problem: Mold and/or Mildew Fungus that grows in damp, dark areas, causes discoloration, musty smells and odors. Musty Odors This is the result of the decay process from mold, mildew, and dry rot. Damp Spots on Walls Sign that water has absorbed through wall block will have dark gray splotches in various places. White Chalky Substance on Walls Known as efflorescence, this is a chemical breakdown of the bonding agent that holds your walls together. Sign of possible structural deterioration. Cracked Walls Sign that foundation has moved/shifted should be inspected to determine the exact cause. Peeling Paint Sign that the wall has taken moisture inside, as paint will not stick to a wet surface.
