Founded in 1990, Southern Nuclear is a subsidiary of Southern Company, which is one of the largest generators of electricity in the United States and serves the regulated and competitive markets. The nuclear company is a licensed operator of nuclear generating plants in Alabama and Georgia. It has developed various waste minimization and pollution prevention plans. Southern Nuclear operates Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, which generates more than 880 megawatts of power and is owned by Alabama Power. The company also handles Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, which is powered by pressurized water reactors. Its facilities are certified wildlife habitats and home for deer, plants and various other animals. Southern Nuclear operates Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, which is located in Baxley, Ga.
