From the moment we slowly drov...

I'm so glad I didn't listen to the first reviewer. From the moment we slowly drove off the main winding road onto the steep dirt road canopied by wild forest, we felt that we may have taken a wrong turn. Surely the sign at the bottom of the road indicating we were at Mt. Pleasant House couldn’t have been wrong, but we seemed to be heading into more forest. 2 long minutes later we came to an immense breath-taking clearing. The road, flanked by what had to be 100ft spruces which seemed to be standing at attention for us, opened out into this sprawling 50-acre piece of majestic property. Mt Pleasant House was an enormous historic home set atop a small hill on a sea of lush green grass with a stable visible in the near distance. The sky was blue, the leaves were changing color, and we were in awe of what would prove to be our paradise for the weekend!

Our hosts were Mary and Tony and they immediately made us feel at home. They welcomed us with a warm cup of tea and offered us a tour of the historic house. It was beautiful!! I’ve been to a few Bed and Breakfasts but this by far is my favorite. The kitchen, the parlors, the numerous bedrooms, and bathrooms were all quaint, warm, and homey. Our hosts then showed us the cottage where we would be staying. We had it all to ourselves! They even stocked our fridge with fruit salad, breads, and soft drinks. Four bedrooms to choose from, full kitchen, and a wood burning fireplace! We were in heaven.

Breakfast at the main house, just 4 steps away, was a true feast. I managed to get some photos, but sadly it was while we were in the middle of devouring the amazing meal. We had homemade pastries, omelets, fresh bread, fresh fruit, potatoes, sausage, bacon, pancakes, muffins, biscotti, tea, coffee, fresh orange juice - the works! My boyfriend is a huge eater (probably a close second to me) and was floored at the hearty, beautiful spread which seemed to keep coming. I also was impressed by this gigantic meal, replete with your grandmother’s good silver! Wow, the detail! We were stuffed and relaxed on the wrap-around porch for a while before we went for a hike.

This place is AMAZING. I can’t stop gushing about it, but realize this post might be too long for some to read. The pricing is unbeatable, the 50 acres are majestic, the breakfast is divine, and they really make you feel at home! I’m in shock that the house and cottage weren’t both booked solid. It’s a mere 90min-2hr drive from Manhattan which my boyfriend loves because “…it’s closer than the Hamptons!” The house is beautiful and the equally beautiful cottage is perfect if you go with a group of friends/couples. We are DEFINITELY going back!! I’ve included some pics!

We couldn't have been more ple...

We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay at Mount Pleasant House B&B!. We loved the secluded, beautifully kept grounds. The main house and the guest house were painstakingly restored, tastefully decorated and incredibly clean. The country breakfast was absolutely delicious! Both Anthony and Joanne were friendly, genuine and helpful. We highly recommend this very special place.

Thankfully, we ignored a previous reviewer's comments, which related to a cancellation due to a tornado. While unfortunate, his review was unnecessarily caustic, especially since he never actually visited.

A Hidden Gem!!!

I must admit I was nervous after reading the first review. I am so thankful that I decided to make my own opinion because the other guy seems a little dramatic. Well it was a great place! The environment was beautiful. We stayed at the guest house. It was very clean. The house has 4 bedrooms and overall a nice size. The person who took my reservation, Kathy, was very nice. The owner, Tony, was the best! He had a perfect balance of being helpful and hospitable yet not "in your face". The location is also a great follow up to any concert at Bethel Woods venue. Only a easy 15-20 min drive to. I almost do not want to recommend this place, just so I can always get a room there!
Thank you, we will return.

this is the least helpful and ...

this is the least helpful and most unaccommodating place in history (i have no way to back that up, but it's a pretty good bet).

there were a group of us going to a concert in bethel (at woodstock) over memorial day weekend. we scheduled it months in advance so we wouldn't have to worry about anything and at first they were very helpful. then, on the friday of memorial day weekend, we got a phone call telling us that a tornado had come through and they had to cancel our reservations. we're talking literally the day people were supposed to start arriving.

we did what anyone else would do and asked what happened and what they were going to do. kathy, the woman who answers the phone and makes the reservations, just flipped out. she said all the hotels and places in the area were canceling, specifically using "the carriage house" as an example. she told us there was nothing she could do and that we had to figure something out ourselves. she was not willing to help or offer any advice or solution. i offered to come up a night early and help clear the roads and not hold them liable as long as i could stay there (and of course still pay) or even camp on their lawn... so she put me through to a man named anthony who is apparently the owner. he told me they had no running water (huh?) or power and nothing was going to be fixed until monday at the earliest. there were a lot of loopholes and things that didn't make sense so i decided to follow up. normally i wouldn't do something like that, but there was literally no where else available in the area.

i called the power company, gave them the address of mount pleasant house and asked what the status was. they said they already cleared corkscrew road and that they were working around the clock to get power back to places and had even gone as far as bringing in outside people and paying them double time just to get things up and running before the weekend. in other words, they were doing what any responsibility company should do. take notes, mt pleasant house. the power company also said power should be up and running by friday morning/saturday night. i asked if anyone from that address had called and they said "no".

i also called the carriage house which is very close to mount pleasant house and told them what was going on. they said that most of the roads had been cleared and everything was up and running fine, they hadn't heard of anyone having any problems and that highway 97 was cleared and traffic was going through it, just a little slower than usual.

red flags confirmed, mount pleasant house had not done anything to try to manage the situation. either that or they just plain lied to me.

i decided to call anthony back to see if maybe he had some new information before i shelled out a lot of money on two different places over an hour away as it was too late to sell my tickets. i also wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because it's the right thing to do. through conversation i found out that there wasn't even anyone at the mount peasant house trying to get things cleared out or taken care of. their office is not even in the same county. it was very obvious they didn't care and weren't even willing to attempt to deal with it. i did more work in an hour from manhattan to resolve the situation then they did. had they just done a little work and calling around, they could have a made a good chunk of money this weekend... but instead they are going to take a huge monetary loss.

i have to admit, this whole incident is really bothering me. i cannot believe that someone would run a company like this, canceling on everyone at the last minute and not offering sympathy, much less a solution. i understand that things happen and you can't control the weather, but how you handle a situation is a description of the type of place you run. we were lied to and more or less told it was our problem. mount pleasant house... you should be ashamed of your apathy.
