- UltrasoundMaternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists are Obstetrician-Gynecologists who undergo an additional three years of specialized training in the assessment and management of high-risk pregnancies. Physicians who practice Maternal-Fetal Medicine are also known as P erinatologists. We focus on the medical and surgical management of high-risk pregnancies, including comprehensive ultrasound, birth defects, genetic testing, and fetal surgery. We also care for women with routine pregnancies by performing specialized ultrasounds. At Georgia Perinatal, we recommend that all pregnant women have a first trimester sonographic evaluation, as well as an 18-20 week comprehensive ultrasound performed by a Perinatologist to rule out pregnancy complications.
