General Info

When Bill Mathews was in Athens High School playing tennis a few years back, a professional career outside of sports wasn’t really on his mind. But the No. 1 tennis player for the Golden Eagles at that time would go on to become one of Athens’ best-known lawyers. Mathews, a life-long resident of Athens and Limestone County, earned his law degree from Samford University in Birmingham in 1989. He has practiced law in Athens for more than 20 years. In addition, Mathews is a judge, who has been residing over the municipal court system in Ardmore, Al. for the past 15 years. But most of all, Bill Mathews is a well-respected husband and daddy. He and his wife, Heather, have been married for 21 years. They have three children, all students in the Athens City School System. Bill has been involved in his children’s hobbies, coaching sons, William Jr. and John David, and daughter, Caroline, for 13 years in the Athens Dixie Youth Baseball and soccer leagues. He also teaches fifth and sixth grade Sunday School in church. William Jr. is a senior at Athens High School, Caroline, a cheerleader, is a sophomore who was a member of the AHS state championship soccer team, and John. David is an up and coming athlete in the 7th grade at Athens Middle School. Mathews is a busy attorney who does job support work for the Department of Human Resources, real estate closings, divorces, domestic relation cases, wills, probate and adoptions, among other things. “You know, a lot of people want to curse a lawyer, but I think most should pray for them,” he joked. “Just be sure you pick your own attorney – figures don’t lie, but lawyers figure.” He said every lawyer does personal injury type cases such as accidents. He gives free consultations. “You should always talk to an attorney before you settle a case. It’s a free consultation, and unless he recovers for you, he doesn’t get paid. You should always let an attorney evaluate your case to go along with an adjuster’s estimate,” he advised.
