General Info

Great design starts with a connection between client and designer. My first priority is not to learn about your marketing goals or your budget—we’ll get to all that—but to connect with you. We don’t have to hold hands or anything. Just talk. Maybe over tea if we aren’t 2,000 miles apart (my office is in western Massachusetts). I have a knack for quickly getting a sense of who you are and then translating that into fonts, colors, and graphics. I believe that this alchemy, more than anything else, is what has made me successful. My designs feel authentic—and authenticity stands out in a marketplace that consumers find shallow and calculating. Besides, it’s nice to be understood, isn’t it? My formal background is in print communications: graphic design, photography, and writing. I have worked in many different environments and contexts, for diverse clients that include nonprofits, marketing firms, sole proprietors, and major corporations. Skills and intuition are great, and I have both. But the reality is, they have to come together on schedule. I’ve worked in deadline-driven environments for many years—print shop, publishing house, major magazine … I can get the job done under pressure. And I’m often told that I’m reassuringly calm as I do. Maybe it’s because I always work in bare feet (unless I’m at your office). I find it very grounding.
