- General Info
- A white board hangs in every one of Dr. Mammen’s examination rooms. “Ninety percent of my visits involve me drawing the anatomy to make sure my patients understand exactly what’s going on with their bodies so they can make informed decisions,” he says. “In my mind, patient care is a collaborative, team effort—approaching problems together and figuring them out together, so I’m big on patient education.” Along with getting a kick out of his drawings, Dr. Mammen’s patients appreciate his compassionate, straight-forward approach. “I want my patients to know that I’ll be there with them from the start until the end. For me, treating patients well and putting smiles on their faces is so rewarding.” Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with parents who were both physicians, Dr. Mammen realized early on that medicine was a good way for him to contribute. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, he earned his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His interest in men’s health led him to urology, and he completed his residency in urologic surgery at the University of Nebraska and a fellowship in male infertility and sexual dysfunction at the University of Virginia. “Men often take their bodies for granted and tend to have conditions diagnosed later than is ideal,” he says. “I’ve always encouraged those who come to see me to speak up, be honest, and not shove symptoms under the rug.” As one of the founders of Urology Partners, Dr. Mammen treats both men and women, but his main focus is on benign diseases of the prostate that make it difficult for men to urinate. “A lot of these guys are very used to getting up four or five times each night, and just accept it as part of life. They don’t know something can be done about their problem,” he explains. “Today, there are so many medications and procedures that can give people a new lease on life. Patient satisfaction is the reason I do what I do.”
