The Alaska Department of Corrections works for the enhancement of the safety of the general public. The department oversees sentenced and pretrial prisoners. It maintains more than five community residential centers and over 10 contract jails. The department s probation and parole division supervises nearly 5,500 offenders, as well as offers sex offender monitoring and victim services. The Alaska Department of Corrections also operates administrative services and institutions divisions. The department administers a variety of reformative programs for prisoners. It conducts the Prisoner Employment Program, which provides assistance with the rehabilitation of offenders.
