General Info
If your looking for a skilled barber in Ames the owner Ray McFarland of All Cuts Barber Shop is here to help with a classic barbershop experience. It's a place where men get their hair cut, and where young boys learn to be men. Providing the perfect cut and a price that is just right. Did you know a barber (from the Latin barba, "beard") is someone whose occupation is to cut any type of hair and give shaves or trim beards. In America, most barbers specialize in the simple cutting of men's hair. They do not generally offer significant styling or 'fancy' haircuts when compared to hairdressers working in hair salons (and that's OK with guys). The barber's trade is an ancient one, with razors having been found among relics of the Bronze Age (circa 3500 BC) in Egypt. Barbering was introduced to Rome by the Greek colonies in Sicily in 296 B.C. and barbershops quickly became very popular centers for daily news and gossip. A morning visit to the tonsor became a part of the daily routine (as important as the visit to the public baths) and a young man's first shave (tonsura) was an essential part of his coming of age ceremony. And to think that mothers still fight with their sons over cutting their hair today. You need a haircut, Love Mom! And now the shocker: barbers in ancient times were also surgeons and dentists. In addition to hair cutting, hairdressing and shaving, barbers performed surgery, bloodletting and leeching, fire cupping, enemas and tooth extractions. Thus, they were called "barber surgeons" and formed their first organization in 1094. The red and white-spiraled barber pole indicated the two crafts, surgery in red and barbering in white. The barber's salary was higher than the surgeon's, that is, until surgeons began being stationed on British war ships throughout the numerous naval wars.
