- Medical Weight LossFat Transfer can add volume to facial features, enhance facial contours, and reduce the facial hollowing that can come with age or significant weight loss.
- Pediatric CareThere are two main reasons dilated eye exams are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Ophthalmology: first, to evaluate the overall health of the eye; and second, to obtain an accurate glasses prescription. A dilated exam is the best way for our doctors to look at the health of the eye including the optic nerve and retina, as well as screen for abnormalities or growths. Checking for a glasses prescription in kids requires relaxing the focusing muscles in the eye. This is accomplished by dilating the pupil and helps us get the most accurate glasses prescription for each child.
- Primary CareEye screenings should be completed by a pediatrician, family medicine doctor, or other primary care provider at birth and at least annually throughout childhood. Many primary care offices are now using photoscreening devices that can detect children that may need glasses, have eye misalignment or other conditions. For most children, these screenings are sufficient. However, if there is family history of pediatric eye disease (including family members needing glasses from a young age), or if your child shows any signs of having vision problems (blurred vision, holding objects very close to their face, or crossing or wandering eyes) then a full exam is recommended. Many schools will also require an eye exam prior to the start of the school year.
- Ear InfectionsExcel Eye Center first opened its doors in 1917—over 100 years ago. Founded by Weston Oaks, Excel Eye Center was the first group medical practice of any specialty in the state of Utah. When we first opened, our practice treated multiple areas including eyes, ears, nose, and throat. (In fact, some of our earliest charts list treatments for tonsillitis and ear infections.) But starting in the 1930s our practice exclusively focused on eye treatments. Since then, we’ve had a long-standing history of providing world-class eye care throughout the state.
- Family Practice
- GlaucomaGlaucoma is a common disease that is often (but not always) associated with high pressure in your eye. It is sometimes referred to as the Silent Thief of Sight because it causes no pain or noticeable symptoms until very late in its course. It is still one of the leading causes of visual loss world-wide. Because of this, it is important to have regular exams by your ophthalmologist if there is a family history or if you are over 60 years of age. Glaucoma is a complex disease process but it is very treatable. It does, however, require close monitoring to achieve a good outcome. Many patients with glaucoma will be monitored every 4 to 6 months for the rest of their lives. With careful follow up, most people that are diagnosed with glaucoma will go on to have a normal life with very functional vision.
- OphthalmologyEye problems can develop at an early age. Scheduling routine eye examinations give children their best chances at optimal eye health throughout their lives. Excel Eye Center provides top-rated children’s ophthalmology services for kids throughout Utah County.
- Macular DegenerationWhile there is currently no cure for AMD, treatments are available that can prevent severe loss of vision and slow the progression of the disease considerably. At Excel Eye Center, we use specific combinations of vitamins that have been shown to dramatically slow the condition’s progress. In the case of “wet” macular degeneration, we employ medications that can stabilize and even, in some cases, improve vision.

- CataractsWith age, changes occur in almost all eyes. Between the ages of 60 and 80 years old, the lenses become gradually more cloudy and opaque. When a lens is opaque, this is called a cataract. This process begins to block light from passing through the front of the eye, causing symptoms such as trouble reading in dim lights, glare while driving at night and other difficulties with overall quality of vision. Because it occurs in both eyes and over such a long period of time, many patients do not realize that their symptoms come from a cataract until they are evaluated by an eye doctor in the office.
- Cataract SurgeryCataracts are removed with surgery. This allows light once again to pass through to the inside of the eye and is able to improve vision significantly. While there are many ways to remove a cataract and different techniques and tools utilized, there is no way to remove the lens without physically entering the eye with instruments designed for this delicate surgery. New techniques to more safely perform cataract surgery are being developed each year.
- Eye ExamThe condition is commonly diagnosed during routine eye exams. However, if you experience a sudden change in your vision or you notice distortion of straight lines, you should notify your eye care provider. Early detection is extremely important because treatments can delay or reduce the severity of the condition. It’s a good idea to have a dilated eye exam every 1-2 years once you reach 55 years old. After 65, it’s recommended that you have a dilated eye exam every year.

- Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetic eye disease can be treated, and treatments are most effective with early detection of the condition. When the blood vessels in the retina have been affected by diabetic retinopathy, laser surgery has been proven to reduce the risk of severe vision loss by about 60 percent. In the case of macular edema, laser surgery can also be effective to seal leaking blood vessels.

- LiposuctionLiposuction removes fat deposits on the body, face or neck. Bodily liposuction is used to slim the figure, while facial liposuction can slim facial contours, correct overly round faces, remove double chins and firm sagging jaw areas. This procedure may be carried out at an outpatient surgical facility or at a hospital. Dr. Engen and Dr. Call consults with each patient to determine the best place for the surgery to be performed and whether local or general anesthesia will be used. Patients undergoing liposuction usually spend about two to three hours in surgery.
- RhinoplastyThe best age for facial cosmetic surgery depends on several factors, such as the surgery performed and the specific patient. For example, many patients find that the best age for a facelift is the mid-40s to early 50s. However, there is a minimum age for facial cosmetic surgery. Minors under the age of 18 cannot get any plastic surgery in the United States without parental consent. The way to determine the best age for your facial surgery procedure is to meet with a surgeon at Excel Eye Center for a consultation. Our surgeons are specially trained to perform many common facial surgeries, including rhinoplasty, facelifts, and otoplasty, in Utah.
