- Services at Main Campus: Computed Tomography (CT) Scanning CT scanning is a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of an X-ray device that rotates around the patient and digital computing to assemble cross-sectional images (or "slices") of organs or body sections. CT differs from conventional X-ray in that it can create highly detailed images of a combination of soft tissue, bone and blood vessels. And it's generally done with lower doses of radiation than standard X-ray. Digital Mammography Digital mammography makes life easier for everyone involved in the process. The benefits include: Shorter exam time - about half that of film systems. Faster image acquisition. Image contrast can be manipulated to show detail for more accurate diagnosis. Improved contrast between dense and non-dense tissue. Storage and recall is much more efficient. Images can be transmitted anywhere in the world instantly. Digital X-Ray Digital X-ray offers several advantages to doctors and their patients. Many doctors can instantly access the images and share in a patient's diagnosis. Lower dosage X-rays can often be used to achieve the same quality image as film. Reduced cost (no film or processing) can allow production of more images showing more detail. Storage and retrieval is much simpler and quicker - one compact disk can hold the same number of images as a large file drawer of films. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) MRI uses specialized equipment and expertise that allows evaluation of some body structures that may not be as visible with other methods such as CT scanning. CT or X-ray imaging can be obscured by bone structure. But magnetic resonance imaging produces exquisitely clear pictures of soft internal tissue such as organs and blood vessels with greater detail and contrast than other methods. An added advantage of MRI is that it can create detailed images of blood vessels without the necessity of injecting the patient with contrast media. Nuclear Medicine A specialized area of radiology, nuclear medicine uses the combination of very small amounts of radioactive "tagged" materials known to collect in specific areas of the body, and a computerized detector that creates an image of the area of concentration. Ultrasound Ultrasound (called "sonography") is a radiology technique that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the body's organs and structures.
