DETAILS
General Info
Originating in China some 2,000 years ago, dragon boat racing is popular throughout Asia, the Pacific Islands, Europe and the United States. Crews consist of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. The Alameda Dragon Flyers racing club practices Saturdays year-round (8:45 to 10:30 a.m.) holds 2 evening practices (Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m.) from March 12 through October 31, runs a challenging boot camp to build paddler fitness, participates in local, West Coast and international races, and has an active social calendar for paddlers and their non-paddling family members and friends. Practices are held on the Alameda-Oakland Estuary, where paddle boarders, kayakers, whale boats, outriggers, sail boats, sea otters and cargo ships also ply the waters. Novice, recreational and competitive paddlers 18 years and older are welcome to attend 3 free introductory sessions before joining for an annual fee of $120. Equipment and instruction are provided; swimming ability is not required. It's a great workout at a bargain price. You should check them out!
