- Macular DegenerationMacular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD), is a serious eye disease that usually affects adults over 65 years of age. It is associated with vision loss in the center of the visual field (macula) due to damage to the retina. The macular region of the eye is responsible for central vision as well as detailed vision. Individuals who suffer from macular degeneration often experience fuzzy, distorted vision and have difficulty performing detailed tasks. Research suggests that nearly two million people in the United States suffer from AMD. There are two types of macular degeneration that can lead to severe damage of the retina and thus impaired vision.
- Laser Eye SurgeryChances are you know people who've had LASIK surgery. You've probably heard the stories about their "Wow!" moment - when they experienced a sudden, dramatic improvement in their vision right after the procedure. Our surgeons are specialists in this procedure. They have helped thousands of Abilene area patients achieve dramatic improvements in vision through laser vision correction.
- CataractsA cataract is a clouding or opacity of the crystalline lens, or focusing element of the eye. This natural lens is situated just behind the pupil. With the help of the cornea, it focuses the light rays on the retina. Technically speaking, any opacity of the lens is a cataract, but generally we only use the term when the clouding is sufficient to significantly reduce vision. The name for “cataracts” came from the ancient Greeks. The white appearance of far advanced cataracts reminded them of the white waters or rapids and waterfalls which are also called cataracts. Today, however, only far advanced and neglected cataracts ever reach the stage of being white.

- Eye ExamIn order to determine the cause of blurred vision a complete eye examination is required, which includes examining the front part of the eye, including the lens, with a biomicroscope (often called a slit lamp) and the back part of the eye with an ophthalmoscope.

- Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetes is a medical condition that can have devastating effects on a patient’s vision. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is the leading cause of vision loss in adults aged 20 to 74. The reason behind vision loss in diabetes sufferers is uncontrolled blood sugar levels, which affect every major organ in the body, including the eyes. Although keeping blood sugar levels close to normal may slow the onset or the progression of eye disease, it may not completely prevent formation of diabetic retinopathy.
